Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb bulk hot Italian sausage
  • 4 artisan buns, split and toasted
  • 4 slices of provolone cheese
  • 2 hot banana peppers, grilled and sliced
  • Pizza sauce, to taste
  • Optional toppings: sautéed onions, mushrooms, or olives

Instructions

  1. Form the Patties: Divide the bulk sausage into four equal portions and form them into patties, slightly larger than the buns because they will shrink as they cook.
  2. Grill the Sausage Patties: Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Place the sausage patties on the grill and cook for about 5-6 minutes per side, or until they are cooked through and have a nice char on the outside.
  3. Grill the Banana Peppers: While the patties are grilling, place the banana peppers on the grill and cook until they are charred and soft, turning occasionally. Remove from grill, let them cool slightly, then slice.
  4. Toast the Buns: During the last few minutes of grilling the patties, place the buns, cut-side down, on the grill to toast lightly.
  5. Melt the Cheese: Once the patties are cooked, place a slice of provolone cheese on each patty and close the grill lid for a minute to allow the cheese to melt.
  6. Assemble the Burgers: Spread a generous amount of pizza sauce on both the top and bottom halves of the toasted buns. Place a cheese-topped sausage patty on each bun bottom. Add the grilled banana peppers and any other desired toppings.
  7. Serve: Cap with the top halves of the buns and serve hot.
